JOHN M. BROOKS AWARD WINNERS
John M. Brooks was Director of Career Planning and Placement at North Texas State University from 1954-1986 and served as the first Executive Secretary of the Southwest Placement Association from his retirement until his death in 1989. He was President of SWPA in 1959, President of the College Placement Council, Inc (now NACE) in 1963-64, and also served as President of College Placement Services, Inc. John led the Association's efforts to include as members employers, college professionals from 2-year colleges, and other campus career professionals.
Upon John's death in 1989, the SWPA Board of Directors voted to honor John's many significant contributions to SWPA/SWACE and the overall career services and recruiting profession by establishing this award in his name.
The John M. Brooks Award was considered the most prestigious award SWACE could bestow on one of its members. It was given only when the Board of Directors deems there was a deserving recipient. It was not an annual award.
What made John M. Brooks so special? He was a pioneer in placement and career services, being one of the early leaders that enabled our profession to become what it is today. John had a passion for people of all kinds. He was particularly passionate about mentoring new professionals into what was then a new profession. John embraced others with his warmth and his almost immediate likeability. His willingness to share his knowledge and experience in a caring, compassionate, and respectful manner endeared him to all who called on his expertise.
Many of the individuals honored with the John M. Brooks Award were beneficiaries of John's wisdom, counsel, and most importantly, his care. He was genuinely friendly, outgoing, and helpful, and he mentored many SWPA and SWACE leaders.
To be the recipient of the John M. Brooks Award was the highest honor a SWACE/SWPA member could receive.
