“From College to Federal Careers: Helping Veterans Succeed Beyond Military Duty”

Facilitators:    James Middlekauff, Assistant University Registrar and

Veteran Services/Certifying Official, University of Central Florida

Karen Pruett, Career Counselor, Auburn University Career Services

Dale Sagotsky, Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor, Department of Veteran Affairs

Glenn Beth, Employment Coordinator, Department of Veteran Affairs

As they return home, the number of veterans entering colleges, universities, and the Federal workplace are on the rise.    Our veterans make a significant difference in both environments, and they bring valuable experiences as students and as prospective employees.   How do we ensure that we meet the challenges that this population faces when leaving the military or transitioning to reserve status?

In this workshop, Federal employers and college/university staff will learn what it takes to help our veterans succeed in college and the federal workforce.   We will address some of the issues that our veterans face when entering or returning to college after active duty with the military. In addition, we will identify the challenges and opportunities they face when transitioning from a military career to employment within Federal agencies.

During this interactive session, the facilitators will introduce participants to the newly developed Veterans Resource Center established at the University of Central Florida. Workshop Facilitators will identify and suggest solutions and best practices for some of the common problems that veterans face when returning from combat or departing from the armed forces. Participants will have an opportunity to discuss strategies to assist veterans in career planning and marketing their military skills in ways that make them attractive candidates in the civilian workforce. Participants will also learn about preferential hiring practices and other resources provided by The Department of Veterans Affairs in offering training and support to aid military personnel in entering the recruitment pipeline for careers within federal agencies.

If you have already registered for the conference, you may go through the SEFRC website and register separately for the pre-conference workshop, using the Conference Registration Form or the Pay Pal option for payment with a credit card.

We hope you will join us for this workshop! See you in Orlando!
