Unpaid internships are a common practice with employers, and career centers continue to discuss the inequities and challenges these opportunities present to students. Join us to hear from two career center professionals on how they secured external grants to support students’ internships at their universities.

Rachael Miller, Director of Experiential Learning for the Najim Center for Innovation & Career Advancement at The University of Texas at San Antonio secured a $250,000 grant from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) and led the implementation process at UTSA to expand off-campus internship programs.

Ryan Taube served as the Internship Coordinator in Career Services at Winston-Salem State University and secured a $110,000 grant from the State Employees Credit Union (SECU) Foundation for the 2022-2023 SECU Public Fellows Internship Program to provide financial support for students completing unpaid internships in the Healthcare Management program. Ryan is transitioning to a new role at Elon University and will be serving as the Associate Director of Corporate and Employer Relations for the School of Communications.
